Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwaraha
We place teachers right next to God and rightly so. The above Sanskrit "shloka" actually equates teachers with God. Teachers mould us into what we ultimately become. I was reading an article yesterday in the WSJ about teachers and their lost position in contemporary society . One line that caught my attention was - Teaching is not a lost art, but the regard for it is a lost tradition.
The most underpaid job in the world is that of a teacher. He/she is creating the leaders of tomorrow, leaders in various fields who will make their fortune based on what they learn from their teachers and what happens to these teachers? Most fade away into obscurity. I have made myself a promise that this won't happen to my teachers. I will be doing something for my school teachers when I can afford to.
Also, my ultimate dream is to enter academics at the age of 45, when I will have made enough money to support my family and will not need to rely on the meager salary that I will draw as a teacher. The joy of seeing your pupils succeed is priceless and that I think is what currently motivates most teachers to tirelessly go on in this noble profession.
Here's to all the teachers in the world!!!
