Rock On a Wednesday
I watched a couple of Hindi movies this week - Rock On and A Wednesday. It was a refreshing change from the run of the mill, dancing around trees, hero taking revenge movies that Bollywood has been churning out. A change is sweeping through Bollywood, a change for the better.
Rock On is about 4 estranged friends who give up their dreams, live a humdrum life, reunite and actually do what they want. The message of the movie was positive - "Do what you believe in, you will be happy". Due to the Farhan Akhtar and estranged friends factors, comparisons with Dil Chaahata Hai are inevitable. But this is no Dil Chaahata Hai. There are no commercially successful stars. The movie has a more serious and offbeat theme. But it still is captivating. Farhan is really a talented individual with a lot of gray matter. He will never make a fool out of himself whatever he does. Arjun Rampal is good too. He is a true rockstar. They are ably supported by the rest of the cast. My only grouse is the music - it is really good, but not mindblowing. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy had an opportunity to create magic, but they have not. Also, there are a few cliches in the movie, but that is still fine - we have seen worse things in Hindi movies.
A Wednesday was beyond good - it was amazing. A crisp 1.5 hour movie with two veterans Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher. The movie is truly different. Really well edited, the movie keeps you spellbound for the entire time period. There are no caricatures, no misfit songs. Naseer steals the show here and does it with the finesse and the panache expected from him. It is an effortless performance, which makes you want more from him. The comedy is subtle. It is one of the best movies to come out in the past year.
Watch both the movies - it's worth the time and money!
